How to take down fake support phone numbers
How fake support phone numbers reach your customers through search, ads and lookalike pages, and how to get the listings, pages and numbers taken down.

ChainPatrol
Fake support phone numbers are removed at the places that publish them, not just at the phone company. Take down the lookalike page or business listing that shows the number, report the ad that promotes it, and report the number to its carrier or voice provider. Then tell customers the one official number to call.
Here's how fake numbers reach your customers and how to remove each route. For fake support accounts on social media, see fake support account takedowns.
How fake numbers reach customers
Search ads on "[brand] phone number" or "[brand] customer service".
Fake business listings in maps and local search showing your name with their number.
Lookalike pages that copy your help center and swap in their number.
Social replies and comments that post a "support line" under customer complaints.
Remove each route
Where the number appears | What to do |
|---|---|
Search ad | Report the ad and file a trademark complaint. See how to report scam ads. |
Maps or business listing | Report the listing as misleading or spam through the map provider's reporting option, and suggest an edit if it uses your name. |
Lookalike help page | Take it down like a phishing site. See how to take down a phishing site. |
Social reply or comment | Report the account for impersonation on that platform. |
The number itself | Report it to the carrier or voice provider that operates it. A number lookup usually shows the provider. |
Reporting the number to its provider
Many fake support numbers run on internet-based voice services rather than traditional mobile lines. Identify the provider, then use its abuse reporting route with screenshots showing the number used under your brand. In the US, customers who were contacted or called can also report the scam to the FTC.
Tell customers the real number
Show your official support number, or say that you don't offer phone support, on every help page.
List it on a verify page customers can check. See build a verify page customers can check.
Train support staff to ask customers where they found the number, and log it.
Handing this off
ChainPatrol handles phone number and email takedowns. Numbers and addresses are investigated and reported to the carriers and providers that operate them, alongside takedowns of the pages, ads and accounts that promote them.
Frequently asked questions
Can a phone number be shut down like a website?
Sometimes. Providers can suspend numbers used for fraud, but it depends on the provider. Removing the pages, ads and listings that publish the number usually cuts off most of its traffic faster.
What if the number appears in an AI answer or search snippet?
Remove the source page or listing it came from. Answers and snippets update once the source is gone.
