How to remove fake executive profiles on LinkedIn, X and Instagram
How to find and report fake profiles of your executives on LinkedIn, X and Instagram, what each platform needs, and how to warn staff and customers.

ChainPatrol
To remove a fake profile of one of your executives, report it on the platform where it lives as impersonation, with a link to the executive's real profile and proof that you represent them. On LinkedIn, use the profile's More menu and choose "This person is impersonating someone." On X and Instagram, use the impersonation report. Then warn staff and customers, because fake executives are usually used to ask for money or information.
Here's how fake executive profiles are used, how to report them on each platform, and what to put in place so the next one does less damage. For ongoing coverage, see employee and executive impersonation.
How fake executive profiles are used
Investment and giveaway scams. A fake CEO promotes a token, a "guaranteed return" or a giveaway to customers and followers.
Payment and data requests to staff. A fake executive messages employees asking them to approve a payment or share confidential information.
Fake recruiters and partners. Profiles claiming to work for you approach candidates, suppliers or partners.
Reporting on each platform
Platform | Report from the profile | Formal route |
|---|---|---|
More, then Report / Block, then "This person is impersonating someone" | LinkedIn Help support ticket; trademark report if your company name or logo is misused | |
X | Report, then the option for an account pretending to be someone else | X's impersonation report form, filed by the executive or an authorized representative |
Report, then "pretending to be someone else" | Instagram's impersonation form, which may ask for ID of the person impersonated |

What to include
The fake profile's link, and a link to the executive's real profile.
Screenshots of the fake's posts or messages, especially any request for money, information or a link.
Proof you're authorized to act for the executive, such as a letter of authorization or a request filed by the executive.
A page on your website listing your leadership team's official profiles.
Reduce the damage of the next one
Publish one rule for staff: no executive will ask for a payment, gift cards or credentials by direct message. Verify through a known channel.
List leaders' official profiles on your website and link to it from each real profile.
Use the platforms' verification and organization-affiliation features where you're eligible, so the real profiles are easier to recognize.
Watch for new profiles using leaders' names and photos, especially around funding news, launches and conferences.
When the fake links somewhere
Many fake executive profiles send people to a phishing site, such as a wallet-drainer or credential-phishing site. Report the site to its registrar and host as well. Once a malicious website or phishing link is confirmed, ChainPatrol gets it flagged in 20+ wallets in about 5–10 minutes and in browsers in about 1–3 hours. Blocking applies to web domains and URLs; fake social profiles and chat accounts are removed through platform takedowns.
Frequently asked questions
Does the executive have to file the report themselves?
Not always. Platforms accept reports from authorized representatives, though some may ask for ID of the person being impersonated.
What if the fake is a parody account?
Platforms allow some labeled parody accounts. On X, the parody keyword must come at the start of the account name and the avatar can't match the person's. See fake support vs fan accounts vs parody.
Should we warn customers publicly?
If a fake executive is promoting an investment or giveaway, yes. Post from official accounts that the profile isn't real and that leaders never promote returns or giveaways by direct message.
