A dark web alert isn't action
Most dark web monitoring stops at the alert. What has to happen next, and why the response plan matters more than the data source.

Dark web monitoring tools are good at finding things. An alert arrives saying a password tied to your domain was found in a dump. Then what? In most teams the answer is a Slack thread, a question about whether it’s real, and a reset three days later, if at all. The alert was the easy part.
Three questions every alert should answer
Is it usable? A plaintext password from this year and a hashed one from a decade ago are not the same finding. If your tool doesn’t say which, your team has to find out, and most won’t.
Who owns it? The person, their role, and what their login can reach. A password for someone who runs your official social accounts is a different problem from one for a former intern.
What’s the next step? Reset, end sessions, check reuse, look for impersonation. If the alert doesn’t lead somewhere, it’s a notification that creates more manual work for your team.
What we changed in ours
We built ChainPatrol’s dark web monitoring around grading. Critical means a plaintext password exposed in the last 12 months. Findings from a domain search can be grouped by person, so you see who’s affected. Sensitive values are masked in the app and the alert goes to Slack, where the team already works. It doesn’t reset anything for you, and we don’t pretend otherwise. What it does is make the first ten minutes obvious.
Write the playbook before the alert
Decide now who gets the alert, who resets, who checks reuse on official accounts, and who looks for impersonation. Write it down. A plan that fits on one page beats a tool that finds everything and resolves nothing. We’ve written a version you can start from in what to do when employee credentials appear in a breach.
Where brand protection comes in
The reason we care about leaked credentials is what they turn into. A stolen staff login becomes a hijacked official account, a fake announcement, a cloned help center. Finding the credential is the cheapest fix. When it’s too late for that, the takedown work begins, and that’s what ChainPatrol has always done.

Dark web monitoring results are not equal. Why recent plaintext credentials deserve the attention, and why counting findings misleads teams.

If you're active in Web3, whether trading, building, collecting, or just exploring, attackers are looking at you. That's not paranoia. The business of stealing from crypto users has grown into a full-blown industry, and the tools and tricks attackers use have gotten a lot smarter over the past few years.
